Tropicana Orange Juice - Michael Evans

On the Tropicana orange Juice carton sitting in front of me, it says that my orange juice is 100% pure and natural. It claims that it is never from concentrate. This seems that this is bragging of sorts, a statement made to grab the attention of the consumer and make them want more to purchase the product. This insinuates a desire by the population to return to a more natural state of things in so much as they wish things to be pure and natural so that they can experience nature at its finest. This is an example of how people wish to return to nature. Just as they wish to return to nature, however, they also want the modern luxuries of society. This is seen by the fact that the orange juice that is 100% pure and natural is also pasteurized and pulp-free. Well here we discover some confusion. Can the orange juice really me natural if it has been pasteurized and “de-pulpified”? In this sense, we look at the orange juice as if it were a type of Arcadia, a balance between nature and culture where we want 100% pure as well as 100% safe and healthy, giving us a fraction of both in one. It is an interesting thing to look at, and quite a fun outside reading.
